Bookkeeping & VAT

Bookkeeping & VAT

We provide flexible and cost-effective solutions for clients bookkeeping. This can be done internally at one of our offices or at client premises, according to what best suits your business. We complete VAT returns, assist with one-off client requests and advise on all VAT matters.

What tasks are covered through our bookkeeping services?

Our team of experienced bookkeepers will record all the financial transactions for your business and can ensure you are using the best cloud accounting software such as xero, sage and dext. We can provide training and support to help you make the most of these online tools.

By working alongside our VAT and payroll departments, Douglas Home & Co can manage all of your business and personal financial affairs.

What are the benefits of outsourced bookkeeping?

The team at Douglas Home & Co will get to know your business and be able to provide an efficient approach to processing your day-to-day finances. You can rest assured knowing that all of your payments are recorded accurately and kept in order. This makes the preparation of your annual accounts and monthly budgets far easier and also allows you time to focus on running your business.

What is VAT?

VAT stands for Value-Added Tax and it is a consumption tax that is placed on a product whenever value is added at each stage of the supply chain. It is compulsory for businesses with an annual turnover of more than £85,000 to register for VAT.

When and how do I register for VAT?

You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover is greater than £85,000. You can also choose to register before you hit that limit.

You can simply register for VAT through the HMRC website, or if you we can do it on your behalf. Once you are registered you will need to submit regular VAT returns and keep the appropriate records and accounts.

What are the benefits of outsourced VAT services?

Our team of experienced bookkeepers can ensure your VAT records are up to date and VAT returns are submitted on time. They also have the knowledge to easily differentiate between zero rated, exempt supply and standard items to make sure you are paying the correct VAT amount. This reduces stress for the client and also reduces their time spend on accounts administration jobs.

Our team of accounting and tax planning experts combine their business knowledge and understanding of tax authorities to help provide solutions that are tailored to your business.

Experts in Bookkeeping & VAT

Tracy Johnston

Tracy Johnston is the current VAT & Bookkeeping Department Manager at DH&Co and has worked at the firm since July 2015.

Tracy went straight into an Accountancy practice from high school and she was there for 14 years during which they provided her with training, so she could complete her Certified Accounting Technician (CAT).

With over 18 years of experience, Tracy has gained a strong and varied breadth of knowledge within the industry. The variety of work is, in Tracy’s opinion, the most enjoyable element of working at DH & Co. She mentions that ‘from small sole trader businesses to bigger companies, from high street shops, to pubs and restaurants, to farms, to charities, the list is endless. The department also gets a lot of one-off requests from clients, for example; software setups and providing training, covering maternity leave, review of bespoke systems, queries on different VAT Schemes, preparing VAT registrations/de-registrations on their behalf.’

“In our 20 years of business, this is the first time that we are happy with our accountants. DH&Co provide a flexible service with very fast response times from all their team members.”

You only have to register for VAT if your annual taxable turnover is greater than £85,000. But you may want to register if it’s under this, so you can claim back VAT on business purchases.
