Construction & Property Accountancy FAQs

How does CGT on the sale of residential property work?

Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a tax on the profit made when you sell or dispose of an asset that has increased in value. While you wouldn’t normally have to pay tax when selling your main home, sales of property that is not your main home are subject to CGT. However, in certain circumstances the sale may eligible for CGT relief if it is a business asset. Our team of tax experts have extensive knowledge of the rules surrounding CGT, and can help you to claim the best relief for your circumstances, taking into account any wider tax implications for your business.

Can Construction & Property businesses claim R&D tax relief?

Many Construction & Property businesses overlook Research & Development tax credits, but the sector is full of opportunities for tax relief. From efforts to improve energy efficiency to developments in equipment, our experienced advisors can help you identify any activities you are carrying out which could be eligible for relief.

Depending on the project, you could be able to claim up to 33p for every £1 spent on qualifying R&D work. For expenditure on or after 1 April 2023, there will be a cut in the R&D tax relief to 86% from 130%. These credits can currently be claimed for up to two years before your current accounting period, and we have helped a number of Construction & Property clients claim relief for projects they didn’t even realise were eligible.

When do Construction & Property businesses need to start thinking about succession?

When it comes to succession planning, the earlier you can start thinking about it the better. By getting ahead of the process you can maximise tax efficiency and ensure that the best successor for the business is identified.

We have extensive experience supporting clients in the Construction & Property industry through the succession planning process, such as our work guiding Edinburgh’s Michael Laird Architects through a major restructure. You can read the case study here.
