Chartered Accountants and Tax specialists Mike Johnston and Victoria Bewley have been promoted to new positions within Douglas Home & Company’s senior team. Commencing their new roles earlier this summer, Mike has been appointed to the position of Director and Victoria Bewley is now an Associate.
Both Victoria and Mike workin the Advisory department and, between them, have accumulated over 25 years of service with the company and, during that time, have acquired a wealth of experience across the business.
After graduating with an honours degree in Accounting and Finance from Newcastle University in 2007,Victoria wrote to a number of local accountants to see if she could ‘get her foot in the door’ anywhere. She found the ideal opportunity right here atDouglas Home & Company. Once in, Victoria instantly liked the positive environment and great people.
Since then, Victoria has seen the company grow significantly over the past decade. Victoria said:
“Back in 2007, there was only one office and about 15 people working at Douglas Home & Company and today there is about 70 people across several offices in Scotland and the north ofEngland. The business has grown, and I’ve grown alongside the business since then which has been a great learning journey for me and I am delighted to have become an Associate.”
Qualifying as a CA in 2012,Victoria has managed the Advisory department for the past five years and will continue to do so in her role as Associate. Having recently moved to Cumbria,Victoria is now running an office in Penrith, but will continue to commute toKelso once or twice a week.
Growing up on a farm and with a background in rural affairs and horse racing, Victoria is looking forward to continuing to utilise her expertise in this area alongside her financial expertise in her work. Victoria added:
“In my new role, my aim is to continue to grow the Advisory department and expand our offering of services by continuing to adopt a proactive rather than reactive approach to our client work.”
Mike originally joined the firm in in 1998, qualifying as a CA in 1999 and initially becoming a Director from 2003 -2011 before Mike emigrated to Australia for three years. Mike continued to work as an accountant in Brisbane before returning to the UK, and to Douglas Home & Company in 2014. Mike said:
“There’s a great culture atDouglas Home & Company. It’s more forward thinking than many other financial companies and there’s a lot more positivity and eagerness to find solutions for clients. That’s why I wanted to work here again and didn’t even consider going anywhere else.”
After returning fromAustralia, Mike was recruited to head up the Advisory department which has been growing rapidly for the past 5-10 years. In his newly appointed role asDirector, Mike is looking forward to being ‘hands-on’ and continuing to work closely with his clients. Mike added:
“There’s so much variety in this job compared to what it can be like in other accountancy firms. For example, if you are the one person who does the tax returns the work can be quite narrow. I find, whether it’s working in advisory tax planning or business development or inheritance tax, whatever it is, every day is different – it keeps you on your toes.”
